The culmination of the latest Fuller Center for Housing-Greater Carroll County area project came to fruition on Feb. 2 when the keys to a new home were handed over to Krystal Rosier.
“I appreciate everybody and all the hard work that went into this,” said Rosier. “I always wanted a house, but didn’t think it would be possible. This is a very good community.”
Dr. Oliver McBride opened the dedication ceremony with the Fuller Center’s “Theology of the Hammer,” which is “the belief that all people deserve at least a simple, decent, affordable place to live.”
“One’s faith has to be demonstrated in action. Building affordable housing for those who need it is a way to do this,” said McBride.
During his prayer of dedication, Kevin Campbell, pastor of the Hillsville Presbyterian Church, said “It is God who calls us to the act of building, of creating. We praise God because we have built something that is tangible.”
Although many churches, individuals and businesses contributed to the project, McBride said the work of the Carroll County High School building trades students was invaluable.
Vance Leggett, a CCHS building trades instructor, said “This has been a fantastic learning experience in education. Over 400 students have worked with this project, including students in math, drafting, and the career and technical education department. The students have contributed not only their skills, but with fundraising activities.”
Those fundraising activities, noted Leggett, amount to $3,000.
Crooked Oak Missionary Baptist Church, Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church, Hillsville Presbyterian Church, Hillsville Christian Church, First United Methodist Church of Hillsville, Mt. Olivet United Methodist and Tazewell Presbyterian Church all contributed to the project.
Grayson National Bank, The Jackson Law Group were key contributors, as were Lynchburg Crane, Deerfield Diggers, the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, Blue Ridge Paving, the Town of Hillsville, Jackson Insurance, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Blue Ridge Concrete, Rotenizer Drapery and Carpet. V&H Heating, LWR Home Improvements, Southern States.
McBride pointed to help from many individuals, including Allen Childress, Jeff Reynolds and Virgil Hall, and to both media outlets, The Carroll News and The Galax Gazette.
Ty Harrison, a pastor of First United Methodist Church of Hillsville, presented Bibles to Rosier, and then blessed the home prior to the presentation of the keys to Rosier by Sally Chitwood, a Fuller Center for Housing board member.
