Although the Carroll County High School graduation ceremony is set for Saturday, May 18, non-senior students will not complete their school year until Tuesday, May 21.
Superintendent Dr. Strader Blankenship told the school board during its April 9 meeting that the state required a makeup day for each of the first five school days students miss, but require just one makeup day for two missed days starting with the sixth day. Carroll students have missed nine days due to inclement weather. With that in mind, Blankenship suggested the board approve May 21 as the final day for students. The board concurred unanimously.
By ending school for students on May 21 instead of May 23, the other option, teachers and staff will have a few extra days to pack and ready for the move of the ninth grade from Carroll County Intermediate School to Carroll County High School. The school year for teachers on 10-month contracts will end on May 25, the day of graduation ceremonies at the high school. Attending graduation will count as the work day.
As for summer school, the first session will be held June 10-28 and the second session is set for July 8-26. Both sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Galax High School.
