Name: Travis D. Jackson

Family Members: Spouse, Caroline B. Jackson, RN Virginia Department of Health; daughter, Retta Jackson, senior graduating from Va. Tech.

Occupation and why you selected it: Government – federal and local, currently Hillsville Town Manager. Served in the federal government for 32 years and retired from Rural Development. Interested in continued community service and Hillsville is a good match.

Where are you from originally? Born and raised in Wytheville, Va. Lived in Carroll County for two years after college and worked in Galax for the federal government.

What clubs, groups and church do you belong? Rotary Club, chair of Board Wythe County Community Hospital Board of Trustees, Wytheville Community College Board of Trustees, Wytheville Community College Scholarship Foundation Board, Wythe Bland Chamber of Commerce, Soiree, Iron Boots Society, and member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Education: George Wythe High School and graduate of Virginia Tech.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing what you do now and why? Retire, serve another community, or accept an appointment in Richmond or Washington as head of an agency.

What is the best part of your job? Working with people and making the community a better place to live.

What is the least favorite part of your job? The length of time it takes for the wheels of government to work.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I try to enjoy the moment; not looking too far in the future without enjoying what is here and now.

Favorite food: Indian

Favorite writer and/or book: Stephen King

Favorite music and/or performer: Pop, Moody Blues(older), Bruno Mars (recent)

Share your favorite memory in your life to date: The birth of our daughter.

Name something you find very irritating and why: Poor customer service. I want people treated the way that I would expect to be treated.

What is the best advice you were ever given and who gave it? A slow drop puts a whole in a rock. (Meaning to stay the course and one will succeed) - my grandmother.

What else would you like the people of Carroll County to know about you? I am committed to cooperating and forming partnerships within the region to ensure that this area can take advantage of economic activities.
