A 45-minute lockdown of Carroll County High School is over without incident. At approximately 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, CCHS went into lockdown after a student of the school posted a threat on a social media website. Members of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department and Virginia State Police quickly arrived to the scene. The lockdown was ended when the student making the threat was found to be at an off-campus location. “It was the result of a student-to-student threat made on an electronic account,” Carroll County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Greg Smith said of the lockdown. “We have verified the location of the student making the threat and we notified the Carroll County Sheriff's Department that we are back on normal schedule. I can tell you the student who made the threat wasn't in school when the electronic message came to the attention of school officials.” Smith said the lockdown is a normal procedure whenever there is a threat to a student or a school in the Carroll County Public School System. “This is a normal process of proceeding to verify a threat and to take precautionary measures and notify the Sheriff's Department of the incident, and that is precisely what took place,” Smith said. “We had great response from faculty and cooperation of students, and the Sheriff's Department responded immediately.” While Smith said he could not give out the name of the student making a threat since he is assumed to be a minor, he said the Carroll County School Board would proceed with disciplinary action commiserate with the offense and await a decision from the Sheriff's Department as to any charges that may be pursued. “Everybody did exactly what they were supposed to do, which is to proceed with a main focus on student safety,” Smith said.
