Since coming onto the toy scene in 1949, Legos have always been popular with kids. With more modern versions of the interlocking plastic bricks ranging from Star Wars to Harry Potter, Legos are more in demand now than they have ever been.
They can also be quite expensive, but now citizens of the Twin Counties can make sure their children have access to Legos free of charge thanks to a new program at the Galax/Carroll Regional Library. From 4-5:30 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month, the Library Lego League meets at the Carroll County Public Library. All ages are welcome to come and let their imagination run wild with Legos.
“Kids anymore are so surrounded by technology, so we thought this was a good alternative to get them away from the TV and the computers for a little while and get them creating and learning on their own,” said Kerri Huff, Youth Services Coordinator with the Galax/Carroll Regional Library. “The program is basically a free program for anyone that wants to come and play. I had heard about it from other libraries in the area that had been doing it for the past couple of years. They talked about how easy it was to get donations and how much the kids loved it. I thought that sounded like fun.”
The program stated this spring after Huff spent the winter reaching out to the community for donations of Legos. Attendance fluctuates depending on school and sporting events, but participants seem to enjoy the club immensely. As attendance grows, Huff would like to incorporate new ideas into future meetings.
“I would like to get a more consistent group for the Lego Club and maybe even get some competition going. That would be my goal,” Huff said. “Sometimes if we have enough kids we will do a show and tell at the end. If we could do a theme each week with a little competition, I think that would be fun too.”
Children of all ages are encouraged to come to the Library Lego League events. Ages have ranged from toddlers to teenagers, Huff said.
“They’ve built some pretty cool stuff,” Huff said. “As long as there is interest, we will continue to do it. It is fun to see the kids play. Half the time I will get in the floor and I end up building something with them.”
The Lego Library League also meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Galax Public Library from 4-5:30 p.m. Donations of Legos are always welcomed.
