According to severance and release agreements signed by the Hillsville Town Council, taxpayers will pay a little over $90,000 to former town manager Larry South and former police chief Steve Williams, who resigned their positions as of June 29.

Following an executive session of the town council during a June 11 meeting, Mayor Bill Tate announced that South and Williams had resigned. The council then unanimously approved their resignations along with a severance package.

Both men will receive eight months’ salary and have their health insurance premium paid for six months. In South’s case, that amounts to $45,454.96 in salary and $2,526 in insurance for a total of $47,980.96. Williams will receive $40,088.56 in salary and $2,526 in insurance for a total of $42,614.56.

South will also receive $9,793.03 for 298.75 hours of accrued, but unused, vacation time, while Williams will receive $6,656.53 for 230.25 hours of accrued, but unusued vacation time. It should be noted, however, that any person leaving the employment of the town is paid for unused vacation time, according to interim town manager Judy Bolt.

Efforts to reach former Mayor Bill Tate and present Mayor Greg Crowder for comment were unsuccessful.

I think the guys knew they they would be fired. I also think the the new mayor and incoming menbers should have given these men a chance it was very evident they would be replaced . All of that experince and knowledge will be hard to replace at a great cost to the tax payers of the town.In other words if it aint broke dont fix it. And i think that was the case on these to very professional men. Good luck guys. I am sure that down the road folks will see what a loss this was to there nice little town .

WOW! What a waste of taxpayer money! I have NEVER heard of anyone getting a severance package when they resign a position. No wonder hillsville is almost bankrupt. People packed the meeting when Bill Tate and the council wanted to add a buy out clause to the contract and were against it. What do they do? Go into another closed session and do exactly what everyone was so against. This decision should have been made by the new council and mayor that won the MAJORITY vote. The old mayor and council should be held accountable for yet again wasting taxpayer money!

Why don’t countries like us?
Ever wonder which countries hate the United States the most. We are hated by a lot of countries, but we really can’t help it. We were just born with a strong personality and, quite possibly, a bi-polar disorder. Nevertheless, we are hated, that’s for sure. Either other countries want us to stay ...

I was reading an article entitled “The Nine Most Common Airplane Accidents” and was quiet surprised that crashing and exploding into a massive ball of flame was not among them. You see, when I fly, that’s what I expect to happen. Now, I know that flying is safer than driving a car, at least th...
