A Lowgap, N.C. woman has been arrested and charged with numerous offenses after allegedly stealing checks from the elderly and cashing them at banks in Hillsville.
On September 4, Sgt. James Alderman with the Hillsville Police Department arrested Vickie Haynes Sizemore on warrants for forgery, uttering, and obtaining money by false pretenses.
Sizemore was involved in the theft of a local elderly person’s checks, then cashing them at local banks in the Town of Hillsville, Alderman said. Carroll County Deputy Joe Holderfield was notified of a suspected similar situation at another elderly person’s residence in the Fancy Gap area by Sgt. Alderman. Acting quickly and working together, the officers found Sizemore being employed as an aide for the second elderly person, and took Sizemore into custody without incident on the Hillsville warrants.
Stolen articles from the first theft were found in Sizemore’s possession after the arrest, Alderman said. Property believed to belong to the second elderly individual taken by Sizemore was also recovered by Deputy Holderfield as a result of this investigation.
It was also discovered by Sgt. Alderman and interim Hillsville Police Chief Jason Hawks that more checks on the second person had been stolen and cashed in Hillsville. Sgt. Alderman and Chief Hawks became concerned for the second party as the investigation progressed and they notified family members, who immediately checked recent bank transactions and found several of them to be bogus. The Hillsville Police Department said the investigation is continuing.
Anyone who has allowed this individual to assist with an elderly person is requested to check bank records for similar activity and contact your local law enforcement agency if you discover any discrepancies or thefts, Alderman said. The arrest of this individual is attributed to quick decisive action of local law enforcement working together. Chief Hawks would like to commend both officers for taking quick action in this case. The names of victims in this case are not being released due to requests from them and the families involved, Alderman added.
