Ryan Gravley became just the sixth boy’s basketball player in school history to score 1,000 career points and Carroll County moved to 14-0 Saturday with an 85-41 rout of Richlands in Hillsville.

Gravley led all scorers with 20 points and joined Pat Sharp, Steve Dowdy, Cheston Stoneman, Tee Jackson and Brad Hiatt in the school’s 1,000-point club.

“I think that is just a big accomplishment and it couldn’t happen to a better kid,” Carroll County head coach Brad Hawks said. “He came out Saturday aggressive and that’s the way he needs to play all the time, looking to score all the time like that, looking for shots.”

Carroll County’s 14-0 start is the best start to a season by a boys’ basketball team in school history. The 1978-79 team started 9-0 before Marc Quesenberry scored 48 points to lead Galax to a 73-71 upset of the Cavaliers. Carroll came back to hammer Galax in the rematch en route to a 24-2 season that ended with the first of two regional championships and two straight appearances in the Group AA semifinals.

Connor Lundy added 16 points and canned four 3-pointers Saturday as the Cavaliers rolled to a 3-0 mark in the Southwest District. Chris Smoot chipped in 10 points and Austin Horton, Tyler Lineberry and Blake Dalton all scored nine for Carroll, which built a 53-16 lead at halftime.
