The massive winter storm that ripped through Carroll County and much of the East Coast claimed the life of a 68-year-old Willis woman Friday afternoon in Dugspur.

According to Virginia State Police reports, Barbara Larue Allen of Willis died at the scene of a single-vehicle accident at 3:45 p.m. while driving on snow covered roads in Carroll County on Friday. Allen was driving a 2000 Chevy Blazer on Route 664 (Silverleaf Road), about one-tenth of a mile south of Route 662 (Poplar Hill Drive), when she lost control on the snowy road, ran off the road to the right, crashed through a fence, struck a bank and overturned. Allen was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to the report. She was not wearing a seat belt, according to the report filed by investigating officer 1st Sgt. Mike Musser.

According to Virginia State Police officials, there were not a significant amount of accidents reports in Carroll County because of the blizzard that dumped more than a foot of snow of most of the area, but there were a large number of tractor-trailers to get struck on Interstate 77 in Carroll. Parts of Interstates 81 and 77 were closed in Wythe County because of the storm.
