Three men were airlifted with serious injuries Feb. 3 after William Roland Dalton lost control of a 2005 Dodge pickup (right) on Route 100 in Sylvatus and spun out into oncoming traffic, striking a 2000 Ford dually (left) driven by Anthony John Swink.
According to Virginia State Police reports, the accident occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Route 100, about a half-mile south of Route 749 (Little Vine Road). Investigating trooper R.B. Phipps said William Roland Dalton, 58, of Dugspur, was driving a 2005 Dodge pickup southbound on Route 100. Phipps said as Dalton was passing another vehicle, Dalton’s vehicle hit black ice and lost control of the vehicle, spinning out into oncoming traffic in front of a 2000 Ford dually driven by Anthony John Swink, 46, of Hillsville. Phipps said Robert Vass, 52, was a passenger in the dually.
Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department volunteer David Young said the HVFD had to extricate all three men from the two vehicles before they were flown out via helicopter with serious injuries.
According to Phipps’ report, both vehicles were totaled. The dually, which was hauling a trailer, had listed damages of $24,000, while Phipps estimated the damage to the 2005 Dodge pickup at $15,000.
Phipps said charges are pending as the accident is still under investigation.
