Even without the public water services it so desperately needs, you have to hand it to the business people in Fancy Gap. The small mountain community nestled beside the Blue Ridge Parkway in Carroll County continues to reinvent and market itself as it strives to capitalize on its accessibility to both the parkway and Interstate 77.

For a little background, the Fancy Gap community continues to seek public water from Carroll County, something the community — and Carroll County Business Development Specialist Bernie Deck recently confirmed after a study — claims is a potential goldmine for business because of its access to both the parkway and I-77.

But even without public water to draw in bigger businesses, the existing merchants there continue to find ways to charm locals and visitors alike. Two of the area’s newest ventures — The Pickin’ Porch and the Inaugural Fourth of July Festival — back up Fancy Gap’s commitment and desire to attract both visitors and new businesses to the area. The Pickin’ Porch, which debuted June 13, adds to Fancy Gap’s mountain charm as musicians are invited to jam on Saturday afternoons (except for July 4th, when musicians will need to schedule a time to play). Bluegrass, country, rock, whatever, music of all kinds are encouraged. Organizers hope the July 4th Festival will attract folks to Fancy Gap as a prelude to the Town of Hillsville’s parade and fireworks display later in the day. A new Dollar General Store will also be under construction soon.

Aside from these venues, Fancy Gap affords both locals and visitors with all the means necessary for a perfect day on or near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Excellent dining choices are available at both the Fancy Gap Deli and Lake View Restaurant. Shopping choices abound at Fancy Gap Pottery & Antique Mall, Fancy Gap Designs, Fancy Gap Dress Shop, Crockett’s Country Store, Treasure Potts Antiques and Garden Shop, Faye’s Antiques and several other outlets throughout the community. Camping is right around the corner at KOA Campground and Utt’s. An awesome view from the overlook at the Devil’s Den Nature Preserve and its many trails also brings a feeling of peacefulness and serenity to those who come by. And did we mention the Blue Ridge Parkway. For tourists who instantly fall in love, there are several realty firms in the area to help you make Fancy Gap your home.

All told, Fancy Gap offers everything someone needs to enjoy a perfect day in the mountains (especially a Summer Saturday). And if that is not enough excitement for you, the new Blue Ridge HOST Visitors’ Center will lead a visitor to the destination he or she desires.
