Richlands took advantage of five Carroll County errors in the fourth inning Thursday in an 8-3 Southwest District victory over Carroll County in Hillsville.
Leading 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth, Richlands got off to an ominous start to the inning as the leadoff batter reached on an error. Rebecca Thomas walked the following batter before retiring the next two. The next four batters all reached on errors, however, allowing the Blue Tornado to balloon its lead to 7-0.
The Cavs made it interesting with three runs in the sixth inning of Richlands starter Lindsey Lester. Lillie Kimble’s two-run double to center field scored both Grace Ayers and Danielle Spence. The following batter, Lexi Hodge, returned the favor with an RBI single to score Kimble, trimming Richlands’ lead to 7-3. Lester retired the next batter to end the inning, however, then retired the Cavs in order in the seventh to end the game.
Kimble went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Cavaliers at the plate.
Lester struck out 11, while Cassie Ringstaff, Holly Bandy and Kelli Hess each had two hits for Richlands.
Thomas struck out 14 for Carroll (8-8, 6-4 SWD) and allowed two earned runs.

With the Cavs trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Meaghan Snow ripped a leadoff single to center, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Kendra Galyean’s RBI bunt to send the game into extra innings.
After holding the Blue Devils scoreless in the top of the eighth, Carroll completed the comeback. Jacqueline Martin walked, then gave way to Cannaday, who entered as a courtesy runner. Cannaday moved up to third on a successful Lillie Kimble bunt, then stole home for the winning run after a passed ball.
The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a pair of Grayson errors and a Kimble single to left.
The Blue Devils got a run back in the fourth on Traci Crigger’s run-scoring double, then took a 3-2 lead in the fifth after an error and Catherine Vaughan’s RBI single.
Spurlin opened the bottom of the eighth with a double, but Rebecca Thomas struck out the following batter, then coaxed a game-ending double play.
Thomas struck out 18 and allowed five hits in the victory.
