Carroll County is pleased to announce that Curtis (Curt) W. Sumner, Jr. has been named the Director of the Recreation Department in Carroll County. Sumner will assume the role of Director in mid-December 2009.
Carroll County County Administrator Gary Larrowe noted that six very qualified individuals went through the interview process.
“We are pleased that Curt will be heading up the Recreation Department. Curt brings a passion for the community and will provide leadership for the program,” Larrowe said.
A Carroll County native, Sumner has been working toward a Bachelor’s Degree and will graduate in December 2009 from Bluefield College with a degree in Organizational Management and Leadership.
He is married to the former Robin Dalton, and the couple has two children, Sara, 15, and Sam, 12. Sumner has lived in the Carroll County area his entire life with the exception of five years spent in Harrisonburg and Blacksburg. After graduating from Carroll County High School in 1984, he earned a Mechanical Technology diploma from Wytheville Community College, and spent 18 years working in the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction fields for a variety of organizations. In the fall of 2005, Sumner began teaching high school, first in Botetourt County, then moving to Radford City Schools. Sumner has attended New River Community College in the Education Transfer program, and Virginia Tech, where he completed the Career and Technical licensure program.
Sumner’s varied experience and educational background, along with his love for sports and a commitment to Carroll County, make him well suited to assume the position of Director of the Recreation Department, said Assistant County Administrator Nikki Shank.
Sumner worked for the Recreation Department as a work-study student while attending Wytheville Community College, and has either coached or been involved in some aspect of almost every program the Recreation Department oversees. Sumner served as a member of the County’s Recreation Commission until the Spring of 2009. As a parent and member of the community, Sumner shares the dream of seeing the Recreation Department operate on par with those in surrounding areas.
