A truck driver from Ohio was injured Thursday when her tractor-trailer lost its brakes and crashed into an embankment on U.S. 52 between Fancy Gap and Cana.
Vikki Powers, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was hurt in the single-vehicle accident which occurred around 4:45 p.m. Thanksgiving day. Rescuers worked for more than an hour to free her from the wreckage after her tractor-trailer turned over, slid across the northbound lanes and slammed into an embankment.
Virginia State Trooper K.D. Blackburn said the truck’s brakes failed and the vehicle reached speeds of 55 to 60 mph before the trailer turned over. He said the truck continued down the highway, dragging the overturned trailer, for a distance before the truck turned over, slid across the northbound lanes of the road and hit the embankment.
Powers was taken to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax with injuries the trooper described as nonlife-threatening.
He charged Powers with reckless driving and carrying an overweight load. “She’s not supposed to be on that mountain going southbound,” he said, referencing signs at the top of the mountain, in Fancy Gap, which state tractor-trailers are prohibited from the road.
Personnel from the Carroll County Rescue Squad, Cana Rescue Squad, Cana Fire Department, and Hillsville Fire Department were called to the scene and were still working clean-up at 8:30 Thursday night.
