Christian Family Fun Day will have a new event this year, a Run/Walk for Jesus 5K.
Matt Hall, the run/walk organizer, said the event seemed like a natural for Christian Family Fun Day, which is set for Saturday, Sept. 20.
“Some of the times I feel closest to God are when I’m running, and I hope that translates to other people,” said Hall, adding that the event is more about fun and fellowship than competition.
“I feel like there will be a good turnout, but it’s not about numbers, it’s about the experience. We don’t want to make it a competition so we’re not recognizing winners. We want it to be more about just feeling good and, hopefully, it will get some people into fitness. I have gotten closer to God as I’ve gotten fitter.”
Hall ran his first 10K while still a smoker.
“I was asking people at the two mile marker for a cigarette. But I quit smoking in March and running has really helped me with that,” he said.
The run/walk is free unless a runner wants a T-shirt, then there is a $10 fee just to cover the cost of the shirt.
Runners will lineup at the Hillsville VFW’s back lot at 7:30 a.m. and the walk/run kicks off at 8 a.m. Runners will exit the VFW lot on Veteran Street, turn right on Oak Street, then south on to Main Street. Runners will turnaround at Victory Way Baptist Church and head north on Main, then turn left at the stoplight and finish at the VFW’s top lot.
Entry forms can be picked up in Hillsville at the Carroll Wellness Center, Cavalier Express and T-N-T Grocery in Hillsville, or at the YMCA in Galax. For more information, Matt Hall can be contacted on Facebook.
