Cave Spring banged out 13 hits and took advantage of six Carroll County errors Friday in a 10-3 River Ridge District win at Bill Worrell Field in Hillsville.

Carroll County (1-2, 1-1 River Ridge) hit the ball well with eight hits of its own, but the Cavaliers stranded six runners. The Knights also plated a pair of unearned runs as Carroll booted the ball to the tune of six errors.

“We put the bat on ball, ours just found the glove and theirs found the hole. We also had six errors,” Carroll County head coach Joe Tompkins said. “It’s not that we played that bad, but we didn’t make the plays we needed to make and they did.”

Cave Spring (3-5, 1-2 River Ridge) put six runs across on the board before the Cavaliers got their first hit. The Knights struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning as Brett Meyers and Cole Flora ripped back-to-back singles with two outs. Nelson Stanley followed with a two-run double to center field for a quick 2-0 lead.

Cave Spring followed it up with a big four-run third inning. Alex Emery led off by reaching on a throwing error, setting the tone for an ominous frame for the Cavaliers. Jordan Stovall followed with a single through the gap. Kodi McIllwraith brought them both home with a two-run single to center for a 4-0 lead. Sam Walker and Grant Snyder both then drew walks to load the bases with nobody out.

Carroll’s Kenley Meredith came on in relief and struck out the next batter he faced. Flora kept Cave Spring’s momentum going, however, with an RBI single to left center. Stanley then made it 6-0 with an RBI grounder back to the pitcher’s mound.

Cave Spring starting pitcher Thomas Forest retired the first six batters he faced until Seth Burris led off the bottom of the third with a single to right field. Burris took second on a passed ball, then scored on Trace Davis’s RBI single up the middle to cut Cave Spring’s lead to 6-1. Reece Edwards then hit the first of his two singles on the day before Forest got out of the inning without giving up any more runs.

The Knights looked to be in business again in the top of the fourth as Emery, Stovall and Walker all singled to load the bases with one out. Snyder then drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, but Meredith got Meyers to ground out to second to end the inning with Cave Spring leading 7-1.

The Cavaliers rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Caden Hodges started things off with a one-out single to left. He moved up after Davis reached on an error, then scored on Reece Edwards’ RBI single to left. Meredith then brought Davis home with an RBI infield single. But with two on and one out, reliever Chase Cundiff came in and retired the next two batters to help Cave Spring preserve its 7-3 lead.

The Knights added three runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Meyers’ leadoff triple to centerfield. Down 10-3 in the bottom half of the inning, Carroll pinch hitter Chris Marshall drew a leadoff walk and Davis followed with a single through the infield. Cundiff retired the next three batters, however, to end the threat and the game.

Stanley went 2-for-5 with a run and 3 RBIs to lead Cave Spring. Stovall collected three hits, a run and an RBI, while Emery, Meyers and Flora each added two hits each for the Knights.

Davis went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead Carroll, while Edwards was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Meredith, Webb, Burris and Hodges each added one hit for the Cavaliers.
