Going into the second day of the Group 4-A North Regional Wrestling Tournament, Carroll County’s Logan McCollum and Joey Rotella were both one win away Monday from qualifying for the state tournament.

A senior, Rotella opened the tournament Sunday in the 145-pound weight class by pinning Woodgrove’s Peter Mysak in 4:40. Rotella then lost by pinfall to Fauquier’s Garrett Tingen in the quarterfinals.

Rotella stayed in contention for a state tournament berth by winning his next two matches in the consolation rounds. He began his comeback by beating Louisa County’s Brian Comploier by a 16-4 major decision in a second round consolation match. Rotella followed that up in a third round consolation match by winning a 12-2 major decision over Courtland’s Tristan King.

Rotella entered Monday’s action needing one win to qualify for the state tournament. He got it Monday morning as he earned a 10-1 victory by major decision over Jefferson Forest’s Luke Mitchell in the consolation semifinals. The win put Rotella in the third-place match, ensuring his ticket to the state tournament Feb. 21 in Salem. In the third-place match, Rotella defeated C.J. Mills of Loudon County 5-2.

McCollum won both his 152-pound matches Sunday to advance to the regional semifinals. A senior, McCollum opened wrestling action Sunday at Eastern View High School in Culpepper with a 9-2 victory over Millbrook’s Gabe Neavarth. McCollum then earned a 9-2 major decision win over Chancellor’s Joe Kreider in the championship quarterfinals.

McCollum dropped his semifinal match Monday by a 6-1 decision to Woodgrove’s Jake David. McCollum then dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to John Handley’s Doland Delany to keep him from reaching the state tournament. With the loss, McCollum dropped down to the fifth-place match, just preventing him from reaching the state tourney. He did finish fifth, pinning Chancellor’s Joe Kreider in the third period.

“The top four in each weight class goes to state out of 26 teams in our region, so it is pretty competitive,” Morris said. “Both have tough matches, but they’ve had to wrestle tough ones to get to this point.”

Three other Carroll County regional qualifiers were eliminated Sunday. Gavin Scott picked up a win for the Cavaliers in the 160-pound weight class, opening the tournament by defeating Dominion’s Mousia Abusaif by a 5-1 decision. Scott then lost by pinfall to Amhert County’s Jacob Brooks in the quarterfinals. Scott was eliminated later Sunday after losing a consolation match to Jefferson Forest’s Taylor Goolsby.

Carroll’s Jarrett Thomas and Brennan Vaught were also eliminated Sunday. At 106 pounds, Thomas lost his opener by pinfall to Sherando’s Mike Duffy, then lost by decision in the consolation rounds to King George’s Logan Kraisser.

At 113 pounds, Vaught dropped an 8-6 decision to Sherando’s Curtis Guthridge in the opening round, then lost by default to Eastern View’s Manny Torres in the consolation rounds.
