Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a single-vehicle car crash that seriously injured a Cana man Tuesday, August 5 in the southern part of Carroll County.

According to Virginia State Trooper J.D. Delp, the accident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on U.S. 52 near the intersection of Brushy Fork Road close to Mountain Man store. He said Jesse James Hawks, 29, was driving a 1998 Chevy Tahoe north on U.S. 52 when he ran off the road to the right and went down a steep embankment before the vehicle hit a tree about 100 feet off the road.

“He was unresponsive when I got there and apparently he was not wearing a seat belt. It was enough to bend the front of the vehicle pretty good, enough to deploy the airbags,” Delp said. “He was already loaded on the ambulance when I got there but it did appear alcohol may have been a factor. With him being unrestrained, it probably did a lot of damage that didn’t have to be done if he was wearing a seatbelt.”

The Cana Fire Department and Cana Rescue Squad responded to the accident and called for a helicopter, Delp said. A helicopter wasn’t available, so Hawks was transported by ambulance to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Delp said Hawks was listed in critical condition as of Wednesday night, but his condition was upgraded to stable by Thursday.

“It’s just fortunate he didn’t go across the centerline and hit somebody head on. He also appeared to be driving on a suspended license,” Delp said. “Charges are pending.”
