Dennis Ward was named Citizen of the Month for April during the Hillsville Town Council meeting on April 14.

Councilman Billy Walls Sr. selected Ward, who moved to Hillsville in 1972 when he was named area manager for the Inter-Mountain Telephone Company, which later became Sprint. Ward retired in 2001 from Sprint after 36 years of service.

Walls said Ward has served as president of the Hillsville PTA, president of the Twin County Chamber of Commerce and president of the Hillsville Rotary Club.

Ward also served eight years on the Wytheville Community College Board, four years on the Wytheville Community College Education Foundation Board, and four years on the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, the last two as chair.

In 1978, Ward co-founded Dawn Auction Co. and, over the years, has conducted benefit auctions for schools, churches, public TV, civic organizations, the Carroll Wellness Center and fundraisers for individuals with illnesses.

Since 1997, Ward has worked with the Carroll Christmas Fund to provide food, toys, clothes, and Bibles to those less fortunate. In 2013, the organization helped 565 families. Most recently, Ward has worked with the cruise-ins that are part of Hillsville’s Summer Nights Concert Series, and been an organizer and supporter of the Twin County Senior Games.

Ward and his wife, Sue, have been members of the Hillsville First United Methodist Church since moving to Hillsville. Ward has served as Lay Leader, council chair and on various other committees at the church.

“Dennis is always quick to give the credit to God and all the wonderful volunteers who he works with, stating, ‘We are all part of a team to try and make our wonderful community an even better place to live and rear our children,’” said Walls.

Ward added that he “was honored” to have been selected Citizen of the Month for April, but that honor wouldn’t have been possible if not for all the volunteers he worked with.
