Parents of Carroll County students hoping to save money on school supplies this year probably do not want to go by the school supply lists already available at Walmart in Galax.

Like the generic school supply lists that used to available on the Carroll County Public Schools’ website, the lists at Walmart are outdated. In an effort to save parents money, Carroll County Public Schools has asked each of the county’s elementary schools to provide its own individualized list for the upcoming school year.

“We have moved from using the generic lists. We found there were some schools that didn’t require some of the items on the list, and we had parents spending money on things they weren’t using,” said Alvin Davidson, Director of Elementary Education for Carroll Schools. “So we asked each school to come up with their own individualized list. At one time, one school’s list was much more expensive than another school’s supply list, so we tried to create a balance.”

Some of the county’s elementary schools already have their individualized school supplies list on their websites. Go to http://www.ccpsd.k12.va.us/our-schools to find a link to every school’s website in the Carroll County Public School Division.

“Walmart has the old generic list, which we took off the webpage two weeks ago. They were ahead of us. I would not go by those lists. I would go by the individual lists and it may save some folks some money,” Davidson said. “We are parents, too, and know that starting school is very expensive for our parents with clothes and school supplies, so we are trying to keep the costs minimal. This should help some.”

Davidson said if you cannot find your child’s elementary school supply list on the school’s website, simply call your child’s school and ask for one of the new lists. He said each individual teacher at Carroll County Middle School and Carroll County High School will most likely provide their own supply lists for parents and students.

“This idea came from our Central Office,” Davidson said. “This is what our principals asked for and these lists are a consensus among principals and Central Office.”
