Two area men were transported to local hospitals Monday morning following a two-car collision on U.S. 58 in Laurel Fork.
According to Virginia State Police Trooper S.E. Kinney, the accident occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. near the Family Stop & Go. Kinney said Jonathan Wayne Hanks, 25, of Woodlawn, was driving westbound on U.S. 58 in a 2006 Ford F150 when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centerline and struck a 2006 Nissan Titan driven by Richard P. Zimmerman, 57, of Meadows of Dan.
Kinney said Hanks’ vehicle was t-boned on the passenger’s side and pushed down an embankment. Crews from the Laurel Fork and Hillsville Fire Departments worked to extricate Hanks from the vehicle. The trooper said Zimmerman was transported to Mount Airy, N.C., while Hanks was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. Kinney said he wasn’t sure about the extent of injuries for either man, but said he wouldn’t deem them as life threatening.
Kinney charged Hanks with reckless driving.
