Driver killed when truck strikes house on U.S. 58

First responders work to remove debris following a tractor trailer leaving Route 58 and striking an unoccupied house on Carrollton Pike near Galax, resulting in the death of the driver Friday morning. The incident happened before 10 a.m. Friday. State Police Trooper C.W. Keesling said the identity of the out-of-state driver of the Volvo Rig would not be released pending next of kin. The speed limit is 55 on this stretch of road. The vehicle was traveling west on U.S. 58 when it left the road. There were no obvious skid marks at the scene, suggesting the accident resulted from the driver falling asleep or a medical condition, troopers said. Area residents said it was the second time in three years a truck has left the road way and struck a residence or caused property damage on the same stretch of road. The road was in good condition and weather was not a factor, Trooper Keesling said. The house was unoccupied as the former resident passed away recently.
