An early-morning fire Thursday destroyed an unoccupied two-story farmhouse on Mount Zion Road in Carroll County.

According to Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Donnie Spangler, his department was standing by for Galax Fire Department for a call at Webb Furniture when the fire was dispatched at 130 Mount Zion Road at 2:17 a.m. Thursday morning.

Spangler said the structure was an unoccupied two-story wood-framed farmhouse. The building had power, he said, and the landowner had been at the farmhouse that evening, but didn’t notice anything unusual, Spangler said, noting it was used for farm purposes and storage.

Galax Fire Department, Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department, Barren Springs Fire Department and Carroll County Fire and Rescue assisted Hillsville with the fire. The farmhouse was most likely a total loss, Spangler said, noting fire crews cleared the scene at approximately 6 a.m. No one was injured as a result of the fire. According to county GIS records, the property belongs to Buford Harmon.
