A Woodlawn man has been arrested for narcotics violations after a report of shots fired at a residence in Hillsville on Thursday.
According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, his office received a call of “shots fired with possible multiple victims” near Stone’s Grocery on U.S. 52 North at 9:35 a.m. Thursday morning. Gardner said responding deputies arrived in the parking lot of Stone’s Grocery and found a man who told them there had been a shooting at a home nearby and that the man inside the store had done the shooting.
Deputies found the man inside the store to be Matthew Blaine Gilliam, 26, of Forest Oak Road in Woodlawn. Gardner said Gilliam was arrested for possession with intent to distribute 10 grams or more of methamphetamines and possession of paraphernalia (needles). Gilliam was transported to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and taken before the magistrate, who placed Gilliam in the New River Valley Regional Jail with no bond.
While still on the scene, deputies were dealing with the first man in the parking lot who became more aggressive and started acting strangely, Gardner said. Deputies placed the man in the back of a police car until an ambulance could get on scene.
“Once in the car the man began banging his head on the cage in the car, trying to get through a small hole in the screen. Rescue arrived on the scene and the man was transported to Twin County Regional Hospital, where he was admitted and treated for a possible drug overdose,” Gardner said. “Charges will be obtained for the man upon his release from the hospital. Deputies arriving at the home, located in the 6000 block of Poplar Camp Road, found no one shot at the residence and no evidence that anyone had been shot. The investigation is ongoing.”
