State Police investigating fatal accident in Carroll

The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred in Carroll County on August 1.

According to the Virginia State Police, Trooper S.E. Kinney was called to the scene of a fatal crash in Carroll at approximately 4 p.m. on August 1. According to police reports, a 2013 Suzuki Motorcycle, driven by Winfred S. Dawson, 31, of Ararat, VA, was traveling south on Route 679 (Wards Gap Road) and refused to stop after a traffic stop was initiated by a Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy. As the motorcycle continued south on Route 679, eluding the deputy, it crossed the center line in a curve near the intersection of Route 686 (Epworth Road).

“The motorcycle struck a northbound 2015 Chevrolet 2500 pick-up truck head on. Dawson was ejected from the motorcycle,” the Virginia State Police said in a press reelase. “He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.”

Dawson was flown via MedFlight to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the pick-up truck – Charles E. Busick, 65, of Ararat, VA – suffered minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

The Virginia State Police Wytheville Division Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
