Memorial Day weekend crash results in a fatality

A Memorial Day weekend accident in Carroll County involving an Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and a motorcycle has resulted in a fatality.

According to Virginia State Police Officer J.D. Delp, the incident occurred on May 27 at around 12:10 p.m. on Route 58 at the intersection of 673 in the area of “Pilgrim’s Trail.” It involved a 2004 model GMC Envoy SUV and a 2011 model Suzuki motorcycle.

Delp said the driver of the Envoy has been identified as James Lee Shrader, age 63, of Greensboro, N.C. and the motorcyclist has been identified as Terry Lane Whittaker, age 66, of Radford. According to a description of the accident, the Envoy was stopped on the eastbound side of the Interstate preparing to turn left. Whittaker’s motorcycle struck the back of the Envoy, ejecting him off of the cycle, breaking the SUV’s back window out. According to Delp, Whittaker was pronounced dead on arrival.

Delp said Whittaker was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident and was not exceeding the 55 mile per hour posted speed limit for the area. There were two passengers in Shrader’s vehicle. All of the SUV occupants were wearing safety belts at the time of the accident and there were no further injuries reported in connection with the crash. Delp said weather was not a factor in the accident, which appears to have occurred do to distracted driving. No charges were filed in connection with the incident.
