State Police investigating fatal Carroll wreck

Virginia State Police Trooper P.K. Cheek is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash in Carroll County. The crash occurred Friday (Nov. 11) at 7:45 a.m., on Route 52, less than a mile north of Route 685.

A 1997 Ford Ranger was traveling south on Route 52, when it attempted to make a left turn. The Ford Ranger pulled into the path of a northbound 2003 Ford Explorer. The Explorer was unable to brake and avoid the turning vehicle in time, and struck the Ranger.

The driver of the Ranger, Alvin E. Howlett, 89, of Hillsville, was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem, N.C., where he died later Friday. Howlett was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Explorer, Christy W. Williams, 46, of Mt. Airy, N.C., was wearing her seat belt and was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.
