The body of a Carroll County man was discovered at the scene of a fatal wreck early Friday morning by a delivery driver at a private residence on Lambsburg Mountain.
According to Virginia State Police Senior Trooper J.D. Delp, he was dispatched to the scene on Morning Side Trail in Fancy Gap at 9:45 a.m. on Friday morning. Delp said the accident occurred on “a little trail that goes through an association out on Lambsburg Mountain.”
He said the wreck occurred about halfway up Lambsburg Mountain off Morning Side Trail about two-tenths of a mile from the driver’s home, which is not on a state-maintained road. Delp said a delivery driver was making a delivery on the road when he saw a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport over a steep embankment.
“It was hard to see. It was a really steep embankment and the vehicle probably rolled 150 to 200 feet,” Delp said. “The delivery driver went down to check and found the man had about another 100 feet below the vehicle at the bottom of the ravine.”
Delp said John Barth Wilson, 78, of Fancy Gap had already passed away by the time the delivery driver made the discovery.
“He had been dead for a while. We’re not sure exactly when it happened, but we think it happened Thursday night or Friday morning, probably before daylight,” Delp said.
Delp and Pipers Gap Rescue Squad, Cana Fire Department and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene. He said the incident is being investigated as an accidental death instead of a traffic fatality since it happened on a road not maintained by the state.
