Travis Jackson, who has served as both town manager and acting town manager, is continuing his work with the Town of Hillsville as a part-time temporary special consultant. Jackson began his new position on May 16, the same date as his resignation as acting town manager became effective.
Figures obtained from Judy Bolt, Hillsville’s administrative assistant and treasurer, via a Freedom of Information Act Request by The Carroll News, show Jackson will be paid $1,250 on the 15th of each month and $1,250 on the last day of each month. Those figures translate into a salary of $30,000 annually.
Jackson’s daughter, Retta, who was hired as Hillsville’s new town manager on April 28, has a salary of $57,824 per year.
Mayor Greg Crowder said the decision to hire both Jacksons became about when council had trouble agreeing on any experienced town manager candidate.
“There was nobody with town manager experience that we all could agree on,” said Crowder. “This way, we’re getting two for the price of one.”
Crowder said that if the younger Jackson needs advice on a minor issue, she will contact Bolt, who will then contact Travis Jackson. If the advice needed deals with a major issue, she will approach town council and council will contact him.
