A Galax man will be charged with felony escape after leading law enforcement officials on a 30-minute chase Wednesday in the vicinity of the Beaver Dam Trail in Hillsville.

Daniel Lee Lineberry, 35, of 268 Crackers Neck Road in Galax, had just finished making an appearance before the Carroll County Magistrate before he fled on foot toward the Beaver Dam Trail behind the Carroll County Governmental Complex.

Virginia State Police Senior Trooper D.B. Suthers said he was serving warrants on Lineberry for a pair of felonies - probation violation and possession of a Schedule III drug - on Wednesday when Lineberry fled. Lineberry is also a registered violent sex offender as he was convicted of aggravated sexual battery on Jan. 12, 1998 and failing to register as a sex offender on Feb. 26, 2001.

“We had been to the Magistrate and I had gotten orders to transport him to jail,” Trooper Suthers said. “I opened the car door and was guiding him into the car when he took off.”

Lineberry fled at approximately 11:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, Suthers said. The Hillsville Police Department and Carroll County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Virginia State Police in the search as the three agencies made a perimeter around Beaver Dam Trail.

Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Mike Musser said Corporal Joseph Holderfield of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office apprehended Lineberry on the property between Russell’s Garage and Beaver Dam Trail in Hillsville at about 11:50 a.m. Lineberry was then taken back into custody and transported to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office en route to New River Valley Regional Jail as he now faces new charges for felony escape.

Suthers said Lineberry is also facing federal charges.
