A conversation with … Jessica Talley

August 11, 2013

Name: Jessica M. Talley

Family Members: My husband is Greg Talley and we have four children. My parents are Rickie and Debbie Hash of Hillsville; and my sister, Jamie Rowlett and her husband, Kenny, and their three children live in Hillsville.

Occupation and why you selected it: I am the Community Liaison and Office Administer at Twin County Funerals. I have always felt a call to serve and to me serving a family at their time of loss is one of the most humbling times to serve.

Where are you from originally? Grayson County, Fries,VA.

What clubs, groups, church and community organizations do you belong? Firehouse Ministries Church in Mount Airy, NC; Creative Arts Director of Firehouse Ministries; Christian Family Fun Day Board; Hillsville’s Gospel Singing Day Board Director; Galax 9/11 Memorial Event Board Member Chairman; Board 2013 Hillsville 4th of July Parade & Events; and volunteer football and basketball coach for Carroll County Recreation Department.

Education: 1998 graduate of Christian Liberty Academy (IL), graduate of Summit School of Cosmetology (Wytheville).

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing what you do now and why? It’s hard to imagine not doing what I do now, but to answer, I would continue to volunteer time in my community and in funeral care.

What is the best part of your job? The best part of my job is being able to be there for someone in one of life’s most divesting moments. It helps me to appreciate life and not to take anything for granted.

What is the least favorite part of your job? I am reminded everyday of how fragile life is. Seeing the pain that people in our community are going through can be difficult at times. I know that that the work I do in some small way helps alleviate the burden, but I find myself sometimes sharing in their grief.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I love serving in missions and sharing the message of Jesus Christ to others. I have served in missions in Belgrade, Southeastern Europe, the Czech Republic and in a native reservation in Canada.

Favorite food: Mexican

Favorite writer and/or book: The Bible. It’s the only book that has always helped, encourages, advised, inspired and has every answer to every element of my life!

Favorite music and/or performer: I am a lover of all music. I guess my favorite would have to be worshipful music.

Share your favorite memory in your life to date: May 17, 2001, and April 26, 2006, the day God blessed me with the birth of my children!

Name something you find very irritating and why: Knowing that we live in a FREE country, the great United States, and seeing others take that for granted at times. As I have traveled into other countries and see their limitations it makes me so proud to live in the United States of America!

What is the best advice you were ever given and who gave it? Love God. Love People – My Pastor Larry Johnson; nothing is impossible: the word itself says “I’m Possible!” – Audrey Hepburn; and “I can do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength” – Philippians 4:13.

What else would you like the people of Carroll County to know about you? I love living in the town of Hillsville and love the citizens in it! I look forward and believe in its growth!
