Ohio man dies in head-on collision in Carroll

A 62-year-old Ohio man died at the scene of a head-on collision Sunday in the Crooked Oak section of Carroll County during a heavy rainstorm.

According to Virginia State Police reports, the accident occurred at 5:59 p.m. on U.S. 58, close to the Snake Creek Bridge, one-tenth of a mile east of Link Road. Investigating Trooper R.D. Horton wrote in his report that a 1996 Ford Van operated by James A. Martin of Columbus, Ohio crossed the center line while traveling westbound on U.S. 58 and struck a 2009 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Mark C. Brostek, 62, of Auburn Township, Ohio.

Four passengers in the Ford Van were transported, one to Winston-Salem, N.C., and three to Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax. One passenger in the pickup was transported to Galax. Martin was in serious condition after the accident, Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Mike Musser said. Brostek was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Musser said he believed charges are pending in the accident.
