An elderly couple whose deaths resulted in an investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday appears to have died from natural causes.
Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said Thursday afternoon the Medical Examiner’s report reflects the deaths of Kay Roberts, 80, and William Roberts, 86, of Quail Ridge Road near Galax as natural causes.
“According to the Medical Examiner, both of these are from natural causes. There was no sign of any trauma or anything like that,” Gardner said. “She is waiting for the toxicology reports for final answers, but it appears to be natural causes.”
FROM EARLIER THURSDAY
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is awaiting autopsy results to determine the causes of death of an elderly couple on Quail Ridge Road that led Virginia State Police and the Sheriff’s Office to investigate Wednesday.
Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said foul play does not appear to be the cause of death for the couple, who he said were ages 80 and 86. The bodies are being taken to Roanoke
this morning for autopsy, he said.
“I’ve not seen anything that jumps out as foul play, which is why we are going with the autopsies,” Gardner said. “There is nothing jumping out that says it’s a murder, but we want to know why.”
Gardner said his department responded to the residence at Quail Ridge Road, just off Cranberry Road, yesterday at approximately 3:30 p.m. after friends requested a welfare check of the residence near Galax. One initial thought was the couple may have died from carbon monoxide exposure, but Gardner said a carbon monoxide test at the residence last night came back within normal limits.
“We’ll know more once we get the autopsy back,” Gardner said.
Gardner said the couple’s name is not being released until more information is available.
