A Texas man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death of a Hillsville man in a traffic accident Tuesday on Interstate 77 in Wythe County.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper A.M. Adams, Donald Ray Alexander, 44, of Houston, Texas was driving a flatbed tractor and trailer northbound on I-77 at approximately 6:43 p.m. when he utilized an “authorized vehicles only” crossover to access the I-77 southbound lanes. John Schrader, 56, of Hillsville, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LT south on I-77 when Alexander pulled out into the southbound lane, causing Schrader to hit the tractor-trailer, Adams said.

“The trucker just came through there and I don’t know if he didn’t see the car or what, but he pulled out in front of him and I don’t think Mr. Schrader saw anything until it was too late,” Adams said.

Adams pronounced Schrader dead at the scene. He said the involuntary manslaughter charge has been approved by the Wythe County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
