A 37-year-old Lambsburg man died Monday night on Sparger Road in Surry County, N.C. after hitting a tree head on.

William Winfield Bobbitt, 37, of 1317 Imogene Road, Lambsburg, went off the left side of the road before overcorrecting and hitting a tree head-on, according to Sgt. Mitch Haunn with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

He said Bobbitt was not wearing his seat belt. The accident happened shortly after 11 p.m., Huann said.

Surry County Emergency Services crews responded to the scene and AirCare was called, but because of the severity of Bobbitt’s injuries, he was taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County where he was pronounced dead around midnight, according to John Shelton, director of Surry County EMS.

Bobbitt was driving a 1998 Ford Contour. Haunn said it was estimated by Trooper Brent Jones, who investigated the crash, that Bobbitt was traveling at about 60 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone when the accident happened.

He said Bobbitt was coming out of a curve when he lost control.

Haunn said a blood sample was taken at the hospital. Officials are waiting for a toxicology report to see if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
