Investigators with the Alleghany County (N.C.) and Carroll County sheriff’s offices found the remains of a human body at 11 a.m. Monday.
According to Carroll County Sheriff John B. Gardner, his office was contacted by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office with information that a body may be located in a well off Chestnut Grove Road in Lambsburg, right across the North Carolina line.
After contracting with Sowers Construction, Gardner said, digging began last week.
The body was found about 50 feet below ground, he said.
He said the bones have been determined to be human, but it is not sure whether it is a man or woman.
“It’s obvious they are human remains, but it’s in fairly bad condition,” said Gardner.
He said Monday evening there was a forensic anthropologist at the scene. The remains will be sent off to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
He said the remains had clearly been buried for some time.
Virginia and North Carolina state bureau of investigations also are working with both sheriff’s offices in the ongoing investigation, Gardner said.
This is the second body to be found in Carroll County this year. The first was found about three months ago in Cana on Timber Road about 200 yards from Bear Trail.
At last check, investigators had determined that body was that of a Hispanic male. That case is still under investigation.
