Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said Thursday afternoon his department is still in the process of determining whether Wednesday's shooting in Pipers Gap was accidental.
“There was a man and woman there and it appears to be a conflict between the two,” Gardner said. “We are still trying to find out if it was an accident or not.”
On Wednesday, October 9 at 8:55 p.m., Deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office responded to what was called in as an accidental shooting at 70 Rippey Hollow Road, located in the Pipers Gap community in Carroll County. Responding deputies found Kevin Heath Frazier, 29, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.
Investigators from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and Special Agents of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations worked the crime scene. Evidence taken from the scene has been taken to the State Forensic Lab in Roanoke for further analysis. Frazier has also been taken to the State Medical Examiner's office in Roanoke for autopsy, as required by state law. Upon receiving results from the State Lab and the Medical Examiner's Office, Investigators will consult with the Carroll County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office about possible charges.
“They have done an autopsy and we are waiting for a few results back. We don't think it will take long,” Gardner said. “We hope to sit down with (Carroll County Commonwealth's Attorney) Nathan Lyons to go over the physical evidence at the scene and to see if he is thinking there will be charges or won't be charges.”
Gardner said a firearm was recovered at the scene and that an unnamed female came in voluntarily and willingly to cooperate with the Sheriff's Office. She is not currently under arrest, Gardner said, adding that she has been in a relationship with Frazier in the past.
“I don't know what their current relationship status was, but they were not married,” Gardner said. “We expect to have some results back from the Medical Examiner reasonably soon.”
