It took Brian and Laura Beth Parnell longer than expected to get their new business up and running, but last week the first golfers took to the tee boxes at Parnell’s Driving Range. The range, which is located on U.S. 52, just past the by-pass interchange, will hold its grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 2-6 p.m., with music and free hot dogs.
“It took about five months to get all the permits and approval by the planning commission, and what I thought would be about $20,000 turned into $45,000, but we’re open,” said Brian.
The driving range can accommodate long hitters with a measured distance of 300 yards, but an actual distance of closer to 320. A small bucket of balls is $4, a large bucket $8 and three large buckets are $20. The range also offers club rental for $1.
Anyone landing a shot in a large bucket down range will win a large pizza and drinks, courtesy of Tony’s Pizza.
The driving range also has a chipping green, and in the coming weeks various tournaments will be added to the business’ activities.
“We will have a horseshoe tournament and a corn hole tournament once a week, and we’ll have a chipping tournament and a long drive tournament,” said Brian.
“We also plan to eventually offer golf lessons by appointment by a golf pro,” added Laura Beth.
The Parnells are also planning a fund raiser for local charities in late October or November.
“It’s called a golf ball drop,” said Laura Beth. “People buy raffle tickets with numbers on them and golf balls with the corresponding numbers are dropped from a helicopter. The closest to the hole wins a grand prize. There are also two other prizes.
“We want it to benefit local charities. We’re in the process of lining up at least two fundraising partners.”
Brian added that “kids will pick up the balls and they get prizes too.”
Activities will be announced on the business’ Facebook page at Facebook.com/Parnell’s Driving Range.
