Two Austinville men were airlifted Monday after a single-vehicle accident ejected one and backed up traffic for seven miles on Interstate 77 Northbound in Carroll County.

According to Virginia State Police Trooper S.M. Cochran, the accident occurred at the 22.2 mile marker on I-77 Northbound at approximately 2:05 p.m. He said a 1982 Ram Charger driven by Brandon Charles Bobbitt, 20, of Austinville, was traveling northbound on the interstate when the power tread came off the left rear tire, causing Bobbitt to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle struck the bank and median and flipped about three times, Cochran said.

The trooper said a tractor-trailer Bobbitt was passing stopped to offer assistance and blocked traffic. The flipped vehicle and debris also blocked the road, causing northbound traffic to back up for seven miles at one point, Cochran said.

Southbound traffic on the interstate was also backed up to allow for two helicopters, one from the Virginia State Police and another from Carilion out of Roanoke, to land. Claude Dean Bobbitt, Sr., 45, of Austinville, and Claude Dean Bobbitt, Jr., 23, of Austinville - Brandon’s father and brother - were passengers. Cochran said Brandon Bobbitt and one of the passengers was airlifted, but he was unsure which one. The other passenger was transported to a Wytheville hospital, Cochran said, adding that he didn’t think any of the injuries were life threatening.

Cochran did not issue any charges in the accident.
