Specializing in donuts, muffins, pies and make-your-own sandwiches, Hillsville’s newest restaurant, The Dutch Oven Deli-Bakery, opened for business July 3.


On its first day, The Dutch Oven offered fresh homemade donuts, muffins, fruit turnovers and deli sandwiches made with Troyers meat and cheeses, salads, and strawberry, chocolate, peanut butter, pecan and apple pies. Owner Rolin Miller had developed quite a following with his food about an hour northeast of Carroll County before deciding to open the restaurant in Hillsville.


“We have been going to Salem Farmers’ Market for three to four years and selling donuts and baked goods there on Saturdays,” Miller said. “I’ve never had a restaurant before, so this is sort of a step of faith.”


Miller is also a general contractor and an agent with Ashley Primm’s real estate business in Hillsville. His family helps him with the restaurant, as well as several members of his church at Island Creek Mennonite Church.


The Dutch Oven also offers breakfast sandwiches in the mornings and pies that may change depending on the season. Meat and cheese is sold by the pound, with offerings ranging from oven roasted chicken, smoked turkey, roasted turkey, honey roasted turkey, roast beef, Virginia baked ham, honey ham, sweet bologna, deluxe bologna and chicken salad. Donuts are made fresh from scratch every morning, and lunch offerings such as pulled pork sandwiches, BLTs and chef salads are also available. Wi-fi is available in the restaurant.


The Dutch Oven is located on Court Street in Hillsville and will be open Tues-Fri. from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays. The restaurant can be reached by calling (276) 728-0302.
